India missed the mark on 19 of 33 tracked SDG indicators. The worst performance clusters in health, gender, and nutrition goals in central and eastern states.
- Off-target states: Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Odisha each have more than 75% of their districts failing to meet SDG benchmarks.
- Critical gaps: child marriage, domestic violence, anaemia, tobacco use, and access to modern contraceptives are the five areas most severely off-track.
- Sex ratio improvement: the National Family Health Survey-5 recorded an improvement to 1,020 women per 1,000 men. This is an improvement over earlier NFHS rounds and moves this indicator closer to the target.
