Polity: The Women's Reservation Bill received detailed constitutional analysis; the special Parliament session ended. President's assent was expected.
Economy: Abraham Accords' third anniversary: UAE-Israel trade grew 74 per cent in 2021-22. The I2U2 grouping linking India to this architecture was noted.
Environment: Study on pink diamonds linked to the breakup of the ancient supercontinent Nuna/Columbia approximately 1.3 billion years ago.
Economy: BIMA Sugam, IRDAI's one-stop insurance portal, was announced for launch in 2024.
1. Abraham Accords: third anniversary and India's position
GS area: International Relations (West Asia, Israel)
The Abraham Accords, the normalisation agreements between Israel and the UAE (September 2020), Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco, marked their third anniversary. India's relationship to this architecture was discussed.
Accords detail: signed under US mediation in 2020. The UAE and Israel signed first on 15 September 2020; Bahrain followed on 15 September; Sudan in October and Morocco in December 2020.
Economic outcome: Israel-UAE trade grew approximately 74 per cent in 2021-22. The two countries concluded a comprehensive Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
I2U2 Group: India, Israel, the UAE and the United States form the I2U2 Group, launched in July 2022. It focuses on cooperation in water, energy, transportation, space, health and food security. The Abraham Accords normalisation made I2U2 politically possible.
India's stance: India welcomed the Accords and has maintained strong relations with all the parties, including both Israel and Palestine. India's traditional Non-Aligned position was tested by the Gaza conflict beginning October 2023.
IMEC linkage: the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor's northern route (through Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel to Europe) was conceived partly in the context of the Accords-era normalisation.
Static linkage: international relations (West Asia, I2U2, Abraham Accords), economy (trade).
2. E-commerce and MSMEs: ICRIER report
GS area: Economy (MSME, e-commerce), Governance
An ICRIER (Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations) report on e-commerce and MSME growth highlighted the gap between MSME registration and e-commerce integration.
MSME definition: classified by investment and turnover criteria. Micro enterprises have investment below 1 crore and turnover below 5 crore; small enterprises have investment below 10 crore and turnover below 50 crore; medium enterprises have investment below 50 crore and turnover below 250 crore.
Scale: approximately 19 million MSMEs registered on the Udyam portal with 131 million employees. MSMEs contribute approximately 40 per cent of India's total exports.
E-commerce opportunity: businesses using e-commerce reported higher turnovers and profitability. Only a fraction of registered MSMEs sold online in 2023.
Credit access barrier: fewer than 5 per cent of MSMEs have institutional credit access. They depend on informal money lenders at high rates.
ONDC: Open Network for Digital Commerce is the government's interoperable digital commerce network, designed to break the dominance of large marketplaces and allow small sellers to reach buyers.
Static linkage: economy (MSME, e-commerce, ONDC).
3. Pink diamonds: supercontinent geology
GS area: Geography (physical geography, geology)
A study published in Nature Communications linked the formation of pink diamonds to the breakup of the ancient supercontinent Nuna (also called Columbia) approximately 1.3 billion years ago.
Pink diamond formation: diamonds get their colour from structural defects or impurities during formation. Pink colour in diamonds is caused by deformation of the crystal lattice under intense pressure during deep-earth tectonic events.
Argyle mine: the Argyle mine in Western Australia's Kimberley region was the world's primary source of pink diamonds, producing over 90 per cent of the world's pink diamonds. It closed in 2020.
Geological mechanism: the study found that the pink diamonds formed when the ancient Nuna supercontinent began to break apart. The rifting process exposed deep-mantle diamonds to intense pressure that created the lattice deformation producing the pink colour.
Supercontinent cycle: Earth has seen multiple supercontinent cycles: Kenorland, Nuna/Columbia, Rodinia, Gondwana/Pangaea and the future Amasia.
IRDAI announced the BIMA Sugam portal for launch in June 2024, designed as a one-stop platform for purchasing, managing and claiming all insurance products.
IRDAI: the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India is the statutory regulator of the insurance sector under the IRDA Act, 1999. It is based in Hyderabad.
Ownership structure: life and general insurers will own 47.5 per cent each of the portal company, with brokers and agents holding the remaining 5 per cent.
Features: policy purchase, renewal, claims initiation and portability across insurers from a single digital interface.
Insurance density: India's insurance penetration (premiums as a percentage of GDP) was approximately 4.2 per cent in 2022, below the global average of about 7 per cent.
Jan Samarth portal analogy: BIMA Sugam follows the model of the Jan Samarth portal for credit products. Both aim to reduce the friction in financial products via a single government-backed platform.
The concept of carrying capacity for tourist destinations was highlighted in the context of hill stations in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Nilgiris being overwhelmed by tourist volumes.
Five components of carrying capacity: physical carrying capacity (maximum visitors the physical space can handle), social carrying capacity (beyond which visitor experience degrades), infrastructure capacity (roads, waste, water, power), environmental capacity (beyond which ecosystem damage occurs) and economic capacity (beyond which local benefits are outweighed by costs).
Regulatory framework: the Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal have asked several hill districts to assess and enforce carrying capacity limits. Manali, Shimla, Mussoorie and Ooty have been specific cases.
Municipal over-reliance on tourism: hill towns' local bodies derive most revenue from tourism-related taxes. Restricting tourist numbers creates local political resistance.
A new marine tardigrade species was discovered in Mandapam, Tamil Nadu and named Batillipes kalami in honour of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
Tardigrades: microscopic animals (0.1-1.5 mm) also called "water bears." They are known for extreme resilience: surviving vacuum, radiation, freezing and desiccation. They can survive on the Moon's surface temporarily.
Marine tardigrades: a less-studied group than terrestrial tardigrades. The Mandapam discovery adds to knowledge of India's coastal biodiversity.
Naming convention: species can be named after individuals as a mark of honour. Batillipes kalami commemorates Abdul Kalam's vision for science.
Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary: in Palghar district, 75 km north of Mumbai. It serves as a biodiversity corridor connecting Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary, protecting leopard movement in the Mumbai metropolitan region's green belt.
Gravitational instabilities in galaxies: an IIA (Indian Institute of Astrophysics) study showed gravitational instabilities in spiral galaxies cause rapid gas-to-star conversion, linking with LIGO-India's upcoming scientific horizon.
Mithun (Bos frontalis): the semi-domesticated bovine of Northeast India, notified as a "food animal" to allow commercial processing. The mithun is important to the agrarian culture of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Mizoram.
