• Israel-Hamas war: Prime Minister Netanyahu declared a formal "state of war" on October 8, one day after Hamas's attack. Western leaders condemned the assault.

Israel's cabinet declared a formal state of war on October 8, one day after the Hamas assault from Gaza. It was the first formal Israeli war declaration since the Yom Kippur War of 1973.

• October 7 attack: Hamas launched rockets and armed infiltrators across the Gaza border fence in the early morning. About 1,400 Israelis were killed, the largest single-day death toll in Israeli history. About 240 were taken hostage into Gaza.
• Scale: approximately 2,200 rockets were fired into Israel in the first wave. The Iron Dome missile defence system intercepted many but was overwhelmed by volume.
• Iron Dome: Israel's short-range air defence system. Operational range 4-70 km. Designed to intercept rockets, artillery, and mortars. Works alongside David's Sling (for medium-range missiles) and Arrow (for ballistic missiles).
• India's position: India condemned the terrorist attack on Israel and expressed solidarity with Israel's civilian victims. India also expressed concern for Palestinian civilians. India maintains diplomatic relations with both Israel (since 1992) and the Palestinian Authority.
• Indian nationals: operation Ajay was initiated to evacuate Indian nationals from Israel. It follows Operation Kaveri (Sudan, 2023) as another non-combatant evacuation operation.
• Finance Minister's Marrakech trip: the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings are held every October. The G20 FMCBG meeting runs alongside. India's G20 presidency (2023) gave the Finance Ministry a high-profile role in these meetings.

A series of powerful earthquakes struck Herat province in northwestern Afghanistan on October 7, killing over 1,000 people.

• Magnitude: 6.3. Multiple aftershocks followed; another 6.3 quake hit on October 11.
• Location: Herat is in northwestern Afghanistan, bordering Iran to the west.
• Geology: Afghanistan sits at the convergence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. The Hindu Kush mountain system experiences high seismic activity. Active fault systems include the Chaman Fault and the Main Pamir Thrust.
• Death toll: over 1,000 in the October 7 quake alone; entire villages were flattened according to UN reports.
• Humanitarian challenge: the Taliban government appealed for international aid. Western sanctions and Afghanistan's economic collapse since August 2021 severely limit the state's response capacity.
• Seismic note for prelims: P-waves (Primary waves) are the first to be detected on a seismograph. S-waves (Secondary waves) are slower. Surface waves cause the most damage.
