The United States Department of Energy approved Holtec International to transfer Small Modular Reactor technology to Indian partners. This marks the first time that US-designed reactors can be co-developed and manufactured in India.

• Regulatory framework: The transfer is governed by 10 CFR 810 regulations. The approval is valid for 10 years and will be re-evaluated every five years.
• Indian partners: L&T, Tata Consulting Engineers, and Holtec Asia are the designated recipients of the technology.
• India's nuclear capacity: Rose from 4,780 MW in 2014 to 8,180 MW in 2025 across 24 reactors.
• Target: India aims for 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047, a key pillar of the Viksit Bharat vision.
• Project site: Kovvada in Andhra Pradesh is planned for six 1,208 MWe reactors under this cooperation.

Small Modular Reactors are designed to be factory-built and modular, with each unit producing less than 300 MW. Their smaller footprint and lower upfront capital cost are why India views them as suitable for distributed deployment alongside large nuclear plants.

The Finance Minister launched the NITI NCAER States Economic Forum portal on 1 April 2025. The portal makes 30 years of state-level economic data publicly accessible, spanning from 1990-91 to 2022-23.

This kind of longitudinal, state-level data is rare in the public domain. It matters for UPSC because questions on cooperative federalism and India's development divergence between states draw on exactly this type of evidence.

UNESCO released its global report titled "Education and Nutrition: Learn to Eat Well" in March 2025, ahead of the Nutrition for Growth summit hosted by France. The findings are directly relevant to India's school welfare architecture.

• Global reach: 418 million children benefit from school meals across 161 countries.
• Gaps: Over 50 per cent of school feeding programmes lack sufficient fruits and vegetables. One-third of programmes offer sugary drinks to students.
• Childhood obesity: Has doubled in more than 100 countries over two decades.
• India: The PM-POSHAN scheme feeds 118 million children daily. This makes it one of the largest school meal operations in the world.
• Critical gap: Only 17 countries globally integrate nutrition education into their curricula with links to food standards.

The gap between coverage and quality is the key policy lesson. Serving food is not the same as teaching children to eat well. The MCQ trap here is confusing PM-POSHAN with ICDS or the earlier Mid-Day Meal Scheme.

• Legal dispute: Canada classifies the passage as internal waters subject to Canadian law. The United States views it as an international strait open to all navigation.
• Strategic weight: The Arctic holds an estimated 13 per cent of the world's undiscovered oil and 30 per cent of its untapped natural gas.
• Warming rate: The Arctic is warming approximately four times faster than the global average. Ice retreat is what makes the passage increasingly navigable.
• Arctic Council: An intergovernmental forum with eight member states established in 1996. India, China, the United Kingdom, and Germany hold observer status.
