- India's total: 43 UNESCO World Heritage Sites as of 2024.
- First four (1983): Agra Fort, Taj Mahal, Ajanta Caves, and Ellora Caves.
- Categories: Cultural, natural, and mixed sites.
- Tourist pressure: The Taj Mahal draws over 6 million visitors annually, creating conservation challenges.
- Threats this year's theme: Climate disasters, flooding, earthquakes, and armed conflict all threaten irreplaceable heritage. Post-conflict heritage reconstruction in Ukraine and Gaza entered the global conversation.

2. Bhagavad Gita and Natyashastra: UNESCO Memory of the World

UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme recognised the Bhagavad Gita and the Natyashastra in 2025, adding to India's representation on the register.
- Memory of the World Programme: UNESCO's programme for preserving documentary heritage of universal value. Distinct from the World Heritage List (which covers tangible and intangible heritage).
- India's total: 14 entries on the Memory of the World Register after these additions.
- Natyashastra: The foundational Sanskrit text on performing arts by Bharata Muni. Covers theatre, music, dance, and aesthetics. Estimated to be 2,000 years old.
- Bhagavad Gita: The 700-verse Hindu scripture that is part of the Mahabharata's Bhishma Parva. One of the most widely read texts in the world.

3. India's primary health care: Ayushman Arogya Mandirs

India's primary health care infrastructure review in April 2025 focused on the transformation of health sub-centres into Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.
- Scale: 1.75 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs) handling 350 crore consultations.
- Out-of-pocket health expenditure (OOPHE): Declined from 62.6 per cent of total health expenditure in 2014-15 to 39.4 per cent in 2021-22. This reflects the expansion of public health coverage.
- Private sector dominance: Despite the decline in OOPHE, the private sector still accounts for 68 per cent of total health expenditure.

4. Majuli Island: world's largest river island

- Threat: Riverbank erosion by the Brahmaputra is the primary existential threat to Majuli.

5. Sivasagar: Ahom Kingdom heritage

Sivasagar in Assam, the former capital of the Ahom Kingdom, featured in heritage discussions in April 2025.
- Ahom capital: Sivasagar served as the Ahom Kingdom's capital from 1699 to 1788.
- Key monuments: Talatal Ghar (the longest Ahom-era structure, built by Rajeswar Singha). Rang Ghar (amphitheatre, one of the oldest in Asia).

- The Ahom Kingdom: Ruled Assam for approximately 600 years (1228 to 1826). Repelled Mughal invasions 17 times. The Ahoms converted from animism to Hinduism over their rule.

6. Aquaculture and technology adoption

The application of digital technology in India's aquaculture sector was reviewed in April 2025.
- Scale: India is the world's second-largest aquaculture producer after China.
- IT investment: 4.5 million dollars has been invested in digital farm management platforms for aquaculture.
- Applications: Disease detection using AI-based imaging, supply chain digitisation, traceability systems for export compliance, and real-time water quality monitoring.
- Export relevance: India's seafood exports are subject to stringent quality norms. Digital traceability reduces rejection rates at foreign ports.
