1. India's record defence production: FY 2024-25
GS area: Economy (Defence), Science and Technology
India's defence production reached Rs 1.51 lakh crore in FY 2024-25 : an 18 per cent increase over the previous year.
- Growth since FY 2019-20: 90 per cent increase in six years.
- Sector split: Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and PSUs account for 77 per cent. Private sector contributes 23 per cent : up from 21 per cent the previous year.
- Defence exports: Rs 23,622 crore in FY 2024-25, a 12 per cent growth. India's export destinations now span over 85 countries.
- Context: India was historically among the world's largest arms importers. The production and export numbers reflect the structural shift under Make in India.
- Private sector significance: The C-295 Vadodara assembly line, Tata's ammunition business and L&T's naval systems are among the leading private contributors.
Static linkage: Defence production, Make in India, economy.
2. India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC)
GS area: International Relations, Economy (Infrastructure)
IMEC, launched at the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023, faces a difficult geopolitical environment but remains India's most strategic trade route project.
- Structure: Eastern Leg : India's western ports to the UAE (sea), then Saudi Arabia and Jordan (rail), then Israel's Haifa port. Western Leg : Haifa to Greece or Italy by sea, then into Europe.
- Infrastructure components: High-speed freight rail, clean hydrogen pipelines, digital infrastructure including subsea cables (the Blue Raman cable runs Mumbai to Genoa).
- Trade weight: The EU is India's largest trading partner : Rs 137.41 billion in FY 2023-24.
- Current impediment: The Gaza conflict has stalled Israeli-Saudi normalisation, which was a political prerequisite for the corridor to operate across the Arabian-Israel segment.
- Strategic stakes: IMEC would reduce India's trade transit time to Europe and bypass dependence on the Suez Canal and the China-dominated Belt and Road routes.
Static linkage: India-Middle East relations, trade corridors, international relations.
3. India Semiconductor Mission: four new projects
GS area: Economy (Technology), Science and Technology
The Cabinet approved Rs 4,600 crore for four new semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission.
- Notable project: SiCSem's Silicon Carbide (SiC) compound semiconductor fabrication facility : the first SiC fab in India.
- Locations: Odisha, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh.
- Strategic significance: India imports approximately Rs 1.2 lakh crore of semiconductors annually. Domestic capacity reduces this import bill and reduces strategic vulnerability in electronics and defence supply chains.
- India Semiconductor Mission: Established under the Ministry of Electronics and IT. Provides financial support for semiconductor design, display manufacturing and compound semiconductor fabs.
- Training target: Over 60,000 skilled professionals to be developed alongside the manufacturing scale-up.
Static linkage: Semiconductors, technology policy, economy.
4. NDRF: composition and disaster response role
GS area: Governance (Disaster Management)
The National Disaster Response Force has been central to Uttarkashi relief operations through the second week of August.
- NDRF basics: Established under the Disaster Management Act, 2005. Operates under the National Disaster Management Authority.
- Composition: 16 battalions drawn from paramilitary forces : BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB and NSG.
- Specialisation: Each battalion has specialised units for CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) hazards. Mountain rescue and flood rescue are core competencies.
- NDMA: The National Disaster Management Authority is headed by the Prime Minister. State Disaster Management Authorities are headed by Chief Ministers.
- Legal basis: Sections 44 to 46 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
Static linkage: Disaster management, NDRF, governance.

- What happened: Members of the Hindustan Republican Association intercepted a train at Kakori, Uttar Pradesh carrying government treasury.
- Key participants: Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Chandrashekhar Azad (who escaped). Rajendra Lahiri was the youngest.
- Aftermath: Four revolutionaries : Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Rajendra Lahiri and Roshan Singh : were hanged in 1927.
- Organisational evolution: The Hindustan Republican Association was reorganised in 1928 as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), adding "Socialist" to reflect a class-based freedom vision.
- Significance: The case radicalised a generation of young nationalists and produced some of the Indian independence movement's most quoted martyrs.
Static linkage: Freedom struggle, modern Indian history.
6. AI and India's IT sector restructuring
GS area: Economy, Science and Technology
TCS and other Indian IT majors shifted toward AI-first operating models, with hiring freezes and restructuring reflecting the sector's transformation.
- Productivity data: AI tools improve software development efficiency by over 30 per cent, reducing the need for manual coding hours.
- Structural shift: Indian IT was built on manpower-intensive outsourcing. The new model is outcome-focused and agent-driven, requiring fewer but higher-skilled people.
- Sector exposure: IT services account for a significant share of India's service exports and provide direct employment to about 5 million people.
- Policy concern: Massive re-skilling requirement. The government's ELI scheme and PM Internship Scheme are partly addressed toward this gap.
Static linkage: Technology, economy, employment.
7. Briefly noted
