- Short-term rating: Raised from A-3 to A-2.
- Criteria cited: Strong GDP growth, fiscal consolidation, stable monetary policy and improved debt trajectory.
- BBB significance: BBB- was the lowest investment-grade rating. BBB is a step higher, meaning lower risk premium and reduced borrowing costs for India in international markets.
- Expected impact: Higher foreign portfolio investment inflows into Indian bond markets. Reduced cost of sovereign borrowing in foreign currency.
- Why 18 years: The previous upgrade was in January 2007, before the global financial crisis. India's rating had stagnated at the BBB- floor for nearly two decades despite consistent growth.

4. Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PMVBRY)
GS area: Governance (Employment Schemes)
PMVBRY was announced on Independence Day targeting 3.5 crore formal sector jobs over five years.
- Employment Linked Incentive model: Businesses hiring fresh formal-sector employees receive direct incentives through EPFO.
- Context: India's Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme framework underpins this. The ELI provides up to Rs 15,000 employer subsidy and Rs 3,000 per month for interns.
- Formal sector gap: Despite large GDP, India's formal employment ratio is low. EPFO enrolment is a proxy for formal employment. The scheme incentivises EPFO registration as the gateway.

- Import context: India depends on 85 per cent crude oil imports. Deep-water exploration targets deposits that shallow water surveying cannot access.
- Technology: Seismic surveys, AI-enabled geological mapping and modern deep-water drilling rigs. No domestic deep-water drilling rig capability exists currently : partnerships with foreign operators are planned.
- Private sector role: Opening these blocks through a transparent auction process is expected to attract global majors alongside ONGC and OIL.
Static linkage: Energy security, oil and gas, economy.
6. S&P credit upgrade: what investment grade means
GS area: Economy
The rating upgrade occasions a refresher on how sovereign credit ratings work.
- Rating agencies: The Big Three are S&P Global, Moody's and Fitch. Each uses a different scale but BBB/Baa2/BBB- represent the lowest investment grade threshold.
- Investment grade vs. junk: Funds subject to investment-grade mandates cannot hold junk (below investment grade) bonds. India's consistent BBB- rating meant it was always borderline. The upgrade to BBB provides more headroom.
- Debt sustainability: Rating agencies examine debt-to-GDP ratio (India around 81 per cent for general government debt), fiscal deficit trajectory, GDP growth rate and foreign exchange reserve adequacy.
- Foreign currency reserves: India held over $690 billion in forex reserves in August 2025 : a record high.
Static linkage: Economy, sovereign finance, fiscal policy.
