1. India's fossil heritage protection gap
GS area: Environment (Geology, Heritage), Governance
India harbours globally significant fossil sites : the Siwalik Hills, Kutch basin and Deccan Trap formations : but lacks dedicated legislation to protect palaeontological heritage.
- Siwalik Hills: Extend across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Nepal and into Assam. Among the world's richest Miocene-to-Pleistocene fossil beds. Yielded hominid fossils, prehistoric elephants (Stegodons) and ancient horses.
- Kutch basin: Late Cretaceous and Eocene marine fossils : ammonites, corals, ancient mammals. Critical for understanding the India-Asia collision timeline.
- Deccan Trap formations: Late Cretaceous volcanic layers. Infill sediments at edges contain end-Cretaceous era fossils : the period of dinosaur extinction. Nesting sites of sauropod dinosaurs discovered in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
- Legal gap: The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 (AMASR Act) covers "archaeological antiquities" : artefacts of human origin. Fossils (palaeontological remains) are not explicitly covered. No dedicated Fossil Protection Act exists.
- Threat: Unregulated fossil collection and export. Road construction through fossil-bearing strata without geological survey.
- What India lacks: The US has the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act (2009). Australia, China and Germany have dedicated frameworks. India's experts have called for a Fossil Heritage Sites Authority.
Static linkage: Heritage, governance, geology.
2. Women's employment: PLFS data
GS area: Economy (Labour), Social Justice
Women's share in regular wage and salaried employment doubled from 22 per cent in 2017-18 to 40.3 per cent in 2023-24, according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey.
- PLFS: Periodic Labour Force Survey : conducted annually by the National Statistical Office. The primary source for labour market data in India.
- Three employment categories in PLFS: Self-employed, regular wage/salary, casual labour.
- Female Labour Force Participation Rate (FLFPR): Rose from 23.3 per cent in 2017-18 to 41.7 per cent in 2023-24 for rural women (15 years and above).
- Driving factors: MGNREGS (rural public works), PM Ujjwala (time saved on cooking fuel), PM Awas Yojana (women as primary beneficiaries of formal housing), Lakhpati Didi programme.
- Concentration problem: The growth is concentrated in self-employment and agriculture. Regular wage employment quality : formal contracts, social security, minimum wage coverage : remains lower for women.
- Gender pay gap: Women earn 19 per cent less than men in similar regular wage jobs in PLFS data.
Static linkage: Economy (labour), social justice, gender.
GS area: Polity (Judiciary), Technology
The Supreme Court issued guidelines on media coverage of court proceedings : specifically on live streaming, social media clipping and fair trial rights.
- Live streaming (2018): The Supreme Court approved live streaming of proceedings in Swapnil Tripathi v. Supreme Court of India (2018). Open justice principle.
- New concern: Viral short clips of courtroom exchanges, taken out of context, distort proceedings. Judges' questions to counsel are not verdicts.
- Guidelines essence: Short clips of judicial questions must not be shared without context. Complete transcripts or full video context must accompany any shared footage.
- Contempt of court: The Contempt of Courts Act, 1971 covers both criminal contempt (scandalising the court, interfering with justice) and civil contempt (disobeying a court order).
- Right to fair trial: Under Article 21 (right to life), the Supreme Court has held that the right to a fair trial is a fundamental right. Trial by media prejudges cases and violates this right.
Static linkage: Judiciary, media, Polity.
4. INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri inducted
GS area: Defence (Naval Power)
INS Udaygiri (the second Project 17A stealth frigate) was commissioned into the Indian Navy and INS Himgiri (the third) completed sea trials.
- Project 17A (Nilgiri class): Seven stealth frigates being built : four at Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL, Mumbai) and three at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE, Kolkata). The first was INS Nilgiri (2024).
- Improvements over P17 (Shivalik class): Reduced radar cross section (stealth hull design), improved ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) capability, better electronic warfare suite.
- Displacement and armament: Approximately 6,670 tonnes displacement. Armed with BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles, Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles, torpedo tubes, a 76 mm gun and close-in weapon systems.
- Indigenous content: P17A is over 75 per cent indigenous by value : a milestone under the Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy 2020.
- Naming tradition: INS Udaygiri was also the name of the previous frigate (F-35, Leander class, 1976-2007). INS Himgiri was first commissioned in 1974.
Static linkage: Defence, naval power, indigenous manufacturing.
5. Sardar Patel: 150th birth anniversary and Ekta Diwas
GS area: History (Modern India), Governance
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875 : with the 150th anniversary in 2025.
- Ekta Diwas: October 31 is observed as National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) since 2014 : the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel.
- Integration of princely states: Patel, as Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister (1947-50), oversaw the integration of 562 princely states. Junagarh (accession by referendum), Hyderabad (Operation Polo : military integration, September 1948) and Kashmir (accession by Maharaja Hari Singh) were the major cases.
- Operation Polo: The police action in Hyderabad in September 1948. Hyderabad's Nizam had refused to join India. Within five days, Indian security forces completed the integration.
- Statue of Unity: Inaugurated October 31, 2018. Located at Kevadiya (Ekta Nagar), Gujarat. At 182 metres, the world's tallest statue. Height symbolises 182 seats in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly.
- Patel's legacy in constitutional debates: Patel chaired the Advisory Committee on Fundamental Rights and Minorities in the Constituent Assembly. He advocated for a strong centre.
Static linkage: Modern Indian History, integration of princely states.

- Format: First held as a bilateral US-Indonesia exercise. Expanded to include additional partners including Australia, Japan, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Canada and India.
- 2025 edition: Conducted in August-September 2025 in Sumatra. India participated with Army contingent.

Static linkage: International relations, defence, Indo-Pacific.
7. Briefly noted
- India-China reform deficit: A commentary on India's ongoing reform deficit : land, labour and capital market reforms : relative to what China achieved during its 1980-2000 growth acceleration phase. India's manufacturing share of GDP is below 18 per cent; China crossed 30 per cent in its peak years.
- Ekta Nagar (formerly Kevadiya): The town around the Statue of Unity was renamed Ekta Nagar. It has become a tourist destination with the Tent City, Flower Valley and a zoo.
- Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC): India is a founding member. MAC targets protecting and restoring mangroves. India's mangrove cover grew from 4,740 sq km in 2019 to 4,992 sq km in 2021 (FSI data).
