12 January is National Youth Day, commemorating the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda (1863 to 1902).
- Born: 12 January 1863, Kolkata, as Narendranath Datta.
- 1893 Chicago address: At the Parliament of the World's Religions, Vivekananda's opening of "Sisters and Brothers of America" drew a standing ovation. He introduced Vedanta philosophy and Yoga to Western audiences.
- Ramakrishna Mission: Founded in 1897. Combines spiritual practice with service to the poor, based on his teacher Ramakrishna Paramahansa's teachings.
- Four Yogas: Karma Yoga (action), Bhakti Yoga (devotion), Jnana Yoga (knowledge), Raja Yoga (meditation). His book Raja Yoga brought yogic philosophy to the West.

2. POCSO Act: consensual adolescent relationships debate
GS area: Society, Polity
The Supreme Court on 10 January 2026 acknowledged misuse of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in cases involving consensual relationships between adolescents.
- Current law: Age of consent is 18 years under POCSO Act 2012, IPC Section 375 and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023.
- Data from Project 39A (NLU Delhi): 25% of POCSO cases before courts involve consensual relationships between adolescents close in age.
- NFHS-4 data: 39% of Indian girls had their first sexual experience before 18.
- Arguments for close-in-age exemption: A 17-year-old in a consensual relationship with a peer should not be treated identically to a predatory adult abuser. Several countries (Canada, UK) have close-in-age exemptions.
- Arguments against: High risk of grooming and coercion misrepresented as consent. Parliamentary committees rejected reform proposals in 2011 and 2012.
- Court's position: Acknowledged the problem without ruling on legislative change. Cases to be evaluated individually for coercion.
Static linkage: POCSO Act, juvenile justice.

- Threat scale: Each plant produces 40 to 45 flowers, each releasing 4,000 to 5,000 microscopic seeds.
- Economic impact: Rajasthan is India's largest mustard-producing state. Mustard is the main source of edible oil; infestations reduce yield by 50 to 100% in affected fields.
Static linkage: Oilseed crops, weed management.
10. Briefly noted
- Cryptocurrency privacy tokens: Zcash and Monero are examples. FIU's ban prevents exchanges from listing these, removing a common money-laundering vehicle.
- Bargi Dam displacement: The Bargi Dam displaced approximately 1.14 lakh people from 162 villages when the reservoir filled in 1989, a landmark case in rehabilitation debate. The Dam Safety Act 2021 does not address past displacement but mandates future dam safety plans.
