1. World Water Day: water and gender
GS area: Environment, Society
March 22 is World Water Day, observed annually since 1993:
- Origin: Mandated by the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development (Rio Earth Summit). First observed in 1993.
- 2026 Theme: "Water and Gender." Highlights the disproportionate burden women and girls bear in water collection and management.
- SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation for all by 2030. India's JJM is its primary contribution to SDG 6.
- Gender and water in India: In areas without household tap connections, women and girls typically spend 1 to 4 hours daily collecting water. This time burden directly reduces school attendance, economic participation, and physical safety.
- Groundwater depletion: India uses about 25 per cent of global groundwater. In the northwest (Punjab, Haryana), water tables are falling 1 metre per year.
- WARIS India (Water Role of India in Solutions): Government's reporting framework for SDG 6 progress.
Static linkage: World Water Day, SDG 6, JJM, groundwater (GS III, GS I).
2. Global Terrorism Index 2026
GS area: Security, International Relations
The Institute for Economics and Peace (Sydney) released the Global Terrorism Index 2026:
- Key finding: Global terrorist deaths fell 28 per cent; incidents down 22 per cent.
- Pakistan at the top: For the first time, Pakistan led the index as the most terrorism-impacted country. Tehrik-e-Pakistan Taliban (TTP) attacks and ISWAP-related violence contributed.
- India's rank: 13th on the index.
- Sub-Saharan Africa: Six of the ten most impacted nations are in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Sahel region (Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger) is the global epicentre of terrorism deaths.
- Deadliest groups globally: Islamic State (IS), Jamaah Nusratil Islam Wal Muslimin (JNIM), Tehrik-e-Pakistan Taliban (TTP), and Al-Shabaab.
- IEP: Founded in Sydney. Also publishes the Global Peace Index. Headquartered in Sydney with offices in New York and The Hague.
Static linkage: Terrorism, internal security, IEP (GS III, GS II).
3. Mutual Credit Guarantee Scheme for MSMEs
GS area: Economy (MSME policy)
The Mutual Credit Guarantee Scheme (MCGS) for MSMEs was modified by the government:
- Guarantee coverage: 60 per cent by the National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company Limited (NCGTC).
- Loan limit: Up to ₹100 crore for eligible MSMEs.
- Key changes from original scheme:
- Minimum machinery cost threshold reduced from 75 per cent to 60 per cent of loan use.
- The 5 per cent upfront guarantee fee is now refundable (1 per cent refunded annually from year 4).
- Service sector MSMEs are now eligible (previously limited to manufacturing).
- Guarantee expires after 10 years.
- Exporter sub-category: Exporting MSMEs get a ₹20 crore limit with a 2 per cent upfront contribution (capped at ₹40 lakh).
- NCGTC: A trust company set up by the Ministry of Finance. Manages multiple guarantee schemes including CGTMSE (Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises).
Static linkage: MSME policy, credit guarantee, NCGTC (GS III).
4. Actinidia indica: new species of wild kiwi
GS area: Environment (biodiversity)
The Botanical Survey of India (BSI) documented a new species:
- Species: Actinidia indica, a wild kiwi species. The commercial kiwi fruit is Actinidia deliciosa.
- Location: Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, at an elevation of approximately 1,725 metres.
- Habitat: Temperate-subtropical forest transition zone.
- Characteristics: A climbing shrub (2 to 4 metres tall) with olive-green globose fruits.
- Significance: Increases the count of Actinidia species globally to 56.
- Arunachal Pradesh biodiversity: Part of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, one of the world's 36 recognised hotspots. Home to several endemic and threatened species.
- BSI: Under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change. Surveys plant biodiversity, identifies new species, and maintains botanical gardens.
Static linkage: Biodiversity hotspots, BSI, Eastern Himalaya (GS III).
5. EV battery fire safety
GS area: Environment, Governance
A fire at an Indore EV charging station on March 18 killed 8 people and brought EV safety standards into focus:
- Primary cause: Thermal runaway. A chain reaction where one battery cell overheats, triggering neighbouring cells to overheat and rupture.
- AIS-156 standard: India's vehicle safety standard for EVs, set by ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). Requires a minimum 5-minute window before fire spreads, allowing occupants to escape.
- BIS 2023 revision: The Bureau of Indian Standards revised EV battery safety norms in 2023 with improved thermal management requirements.
- The gap: India does not have a mandatory EV fire accident reporting database. Without centralised data, systemic risks are hard to identify and the standards are hard to update.
- Market context: India's EV sales are growing rapidly. Two and three-wheelers dominate the EV market. Charging infrastructure is often built by operators with minimal quality control.
Static linkage: EV safety, BIS standards, product regulation (GS III).
6. INS Taragiri: Project 17A frigate
GS area: Security (Defence)
The fourth ship of the Nilgiri class (Project 17A) was being prepared for commissioning:
- INS Taragiri: To be commissioned April 3, 2026.
- Builder: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Limited (MDL), Mumbai. MDL is the lead shipyard for Project 17A.
- Designer: Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau.
- Class: Nilgiri class (formerly Shivalik-class follow-on). Stealth frigates with enhanced ASW capability.
- Propulsion: CODOG (Combined Diesel or Gas) with Controllable Pitch Propeller.
- Armament: BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, MRSAM (Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile), 76mm Super Rapid Gun Mount.
- Project 17A: India's largest warship building programme. Seven frigates ordered: four at MDL, three at GRSE (Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers).
Static linkage: Defence indigenisation, warship building (GS III).
7. Disability rights: SC ruling
GS area: Polity (rights)
The Supreme Court ruled on disability percentage thresholds for government employment:
- The case: An advocate with 90 per cent locomotor disability was rejected for a government position despite scoring highly in the examination.
- RPwD Act, 2016: Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act. Defines 40 per cent as the benchmark disability percentage. This is the floor for reservation eligibility, not a ceiling for exclusion.
- The ruling: States cannot impose arbitrary ceilings on disability percentage for government posts. "Otherwise capable" candidates with higher disability percentages cannot be excluded arbitrarily.
- Reasonable Accommodation Principle: The RPwD Act mandates that government employers provide reasonable accommodations to enable persons with disabilities to perform their duties. Exclusion without assessing reasonable accommodation violates the Act.
Static linkage: Rights of Persons with Disabilities, RPwD Act (GS II).
