1. National Voters' Day: ECI at 76

25 January is National Voters' Day (NVD), observed since 2011 to mark the Election Commission of India's founding on 25 January 1950.
- ECI founding: Under Article 324 of the Constitution. The Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950; the ECI was established on 25 January 1950, one day before.
- 2026 theme: "Nothing like voting, I vote for sure" with focus on youth voters aged 18-25.
- Current voter roll: 969 million registered voters following the January 2026 electoral roll revision.
- New voter registration: 13 million new voters added in the 2026 roll revision. Youth (18-19 age group) constitute the largest addition.
- EPIC: On NVD, Electoral Photo Identity Cards are distributed to newly registered first-time voters at district events.
- SVEEP programme: Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation programme runs year-round; campuses, factories and communities mobilised.

2. Padma Awards 2026

Padma Awards 2026 were announced on the eve of Republic Day. The awards are India's highest civilian honours.
- Numbers: 119 total awards; 7 Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan, 93 Padma Shri.
- Posthumous: 7 awardees are posthumous.
- Selection committee: Committee chaired by Cabinet Secretary; recommendations go to PM; approved by President.
- Constitutional basis: The awards are civilian decorations under Article 18(2) which prohibits use as titles.
- Ineligibility: Sitting MPs, Union Ministers, State Ministers, Governors and Chief Ministers are ineligible.

3. Republic Day 2026: Indonesia as Chief Guest

Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto is the Chief Guest for Republic Day 2026 on 26 January.

- Defence cooperation: India and Indonesia signed a Defence Cooperation Agreement in 2018; joint naval exercises (Samudra Shakti).
- Trade: India-Indonesia bilateral trade approximately 30 billion USD in FY25. Indonesia is a major palm oil supplier to India.
- Prabowo background: Prabowo Subianto is a former military general and Defence Minister. Won Indonesia's 2024 presidential election.
- Republic Day significance: 26 January 1950: Constitution of India came into force; India became a Republic. India's Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on 26 November 1949 (now Constitution Day / Samvidhan Divas).

4. States' capex execution

A pre-budget analysis of states' capital expenditure performance: states executed 74% of budgeted capex targets in the first 9 months (April-December 2025) of FY26.
- State capex importance: State governments collectively spend more on infrastructure than the Centre. Combined state capex is approximately 7-8 lakh crore rupees per year.
- Central incentive: The Centre provides interest-free 50-year loans to states for capex under the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment.
- FY26 scheme allocation: 1.5 lakh crore rupees of interest-free loans for state capex.
- Back-loaded problem: State capex tends to be back-loaded (Q4 rush). Projects sanctioned but not completed by March 31 lapse.
- High performers: Gujarat, Telangana and Odisha among the top capex-executing states.
- Low performers: Some northeastern states and J&K behind target due to administrative capacity gaps.

5. Holocaust Remembrance Day

27 January is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, observed by the United Nations since 2006.
- Date significance: 27 January 1945: Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp (the largest Nazi extermination camp) by Soviet forces.
- UN resolution: General Assembly Resolution 60/7 (2005) designated 27 January as the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.
- Scale of the Holocaust: 6 million Jews and 5 million others (Roma, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, political prisoners) systematically killed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators (1941-1945).
- India context: India was a vocal opponent of racial discrimination since the 1930s; Rabindranath Tagore criticised Nazi Germany publicly. India was not involved in the Holocaust.
- IHRA: International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance: 34 member states, including India (observer status since 2016) committed to Holocaust education and research.

6. Coal India: production and decarbonisation

Coal India Limited (CIL) achieved production of 800 million tonnes in FY25, ahead of the 780-million-tonne target.
- CIL scale: The world's largest coal producer. Produces approximately 80% of India's domestic coal.
- Coal in India: Thermal coal powers approximately 70% of India's electricity. Without coal, the grid cannot currently meet demand.
- India's position at COP29 Baku (2024): India resisted a "phase out" of coal; agreed to "phase down unabated coal" with international climate finance.
- Unabated vs Abated: "Unabated" means without Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). India's position is that coal with CCUS should remain available.
- Transition plan: CIL is diversifying into coal gasification, solar power plants on mine land (1 GW target), and coal-to-methanol projects.

7. India's Antarctic Treaty: Maitri and Bharati

India's Antarctica governance came into focus with the anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty signing.
- Antarctic Treaty: Signed 1 December 1959; entered into force 23 June 1961. 12 original signatories. Now 56 parties.
- Key provisions: Antarctica is a demilitarised zone. Nuclear tests and radioactive waste disposal are banned. Scientific research open to all parties.
- India's accession: 1983. India is a Consultative Party (full voting rights on treaty decisions).
- India's stations:
- Maitri: Schirmacher Hills, East Antarctica. Operational since 1989.
- Bharati: Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica. Operational since 2012.
