1. Republic Day 2026: constitutional significance

77th Republic Day marks 76 years since the Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950.
- Why 26 January: The Indian National Congress had declared Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) on 26 January 1930 at the Lahore session. This date was chosen to give the Constitution's commencement symbolic resonance.
- Constitution Adoption vs Commencement: The Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on 26 November 1949 (Constitution Day / Samvidhan Divas). It came into force on 26 January 1950.
- Republic: India became a Republic (replacing the Dominion of India) with a President as ceremonial head, replacing the King of England.
- First Republic Day parade: Held at Rajpath (now Kartavya Path) in New Delhi. The tradition of a Chief Guest from a friendly nation began then.
- Chief Guest 2026: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. India hosted 8 Indonesian heads of state as Chief Guest since 1950.

2. PM MITRA textile parks

PM Modi inaugurated the PM MITRA (Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel) park at Varanasi.

3. IUCN Red List update: India-specific

The January 2026 IUCN Red List update included several Indian species status changes.
- Delisted (Threatened to Least Concern): 5 Indian species improved, including the Indian flying fox (bat species) and two freshwater fish species from Kerala.
- Clouded leopard status: Neofelis nebulosa reclassified from Vulnerable to Endangered. Found in northeast India (Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Sikkim, Tripura).
- Clouded leopard facts: Recognised as a distinct genus from the Sunda Clouded Leopard (Neofelis diardi). Has the largest canine teeth relative to body size of any living cat species. Solitary, arboreal predator.
- IUCN categories: Extinct, Extinct in the Wild, Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable, Near Threatened, Least Concern.
- India's threatened species: India has 132 Critically Endangered species as of 2026 across fauna and flora.

4. K9 Vajra howitzer: republic day debut

The K9 Vajra self-propelled howitzer made its Republic Day parade debut in 2026.
- Manufacturer: L&T (Larsen and Toubro) with technology transfer from Hanwha (South Korea).
- Calibre: 155 mm, 52 calibre.
- Range: Up to 40 km with extended-range ammunition.
- Capability: Self-propelled (moves on its own tracks); does not need a separate towing vehicle. Can shoot and move rapidly (shoot-and-scoot tactic).
- Indian production: Manufactured at L&T's Hazira facility. First contract: 100 units for Indian Army in 2017.

7. Kartavya Path and Rajpath

- Historical name: The ceremonial boulevard in New Delhi was "Rajpath" (originally King's Way under British rule, renamed Rajpath post-independence).
- New name: Renamed "Kartavya Path" (Path of Duty) on 8 September 2022, at the inauguration of the redeveloped Central Vista.
- Stretch: From Rashtrapati Bhavan to the National War Memorial (replacing India Gate as the parade reference).
- Central Vista redevelopment: Includes new Parliament building (inaugurated 28 May 2023), PM's official residence relocation, and redeveloped North and South Block offices.
